PLL Research Paper Receives ASEE’s Superior Student Paper Award

Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Art in Space: Using Art to Interest K-12 Students in Aerospace Design,” a research paper authored by members and friends of the Playful Learning Lab (PLL), received the Super Student Paper Award in the Aerospace Division at the 2020 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference and Exhibition.

Many of the other papers in the Aerospace division were written by graduate students.  The award-winning paper, written by undergraduate PLL members, was the first paper the PLL has ever submitted to the Aerospace division.

“We were delighted that it was accepted,” said AnnMarie Thomas, director of the PLL.  “To also be awarded the superior paper prize is an amazing testament to the incredible amount of hard work that these students put into this challenging, large-scale project and the documentation of it.”

PLL members presented a total of 11 papers at ASEE’s virtual conference June 22-26.  The paper topics ranged from art and music to aerospace, circuits, and the environment:

  • “Art in Space: Using Art to Interest K-12 Students in Aerospace Design” by Maria Baklund, MiKyla Harjamaki, Hannah French, Patrick Roche, Cullen Kittams, Molly Roche, Deb Besser, Damian Kulash, Jeff Jalkio, and AnnMarie Thomas

  • “Using Music Videos to Inspire Engineering” by Krista Schumacher, Molly Roche, Esmee Verschoor, Hannah French, Alyssa Eggersgluss, MiKyla Harjamaki, Mary Fagot, Deb Besser, Jeff Jalkio, AnnMarie Thomas, Collin Goldbach, and Abby Bensen

  • “Work in Progress: Code + Chords: Targeting Self-efficacy in Music Technology” by Alyssa Eggersgluss, AnnMarie Thomas, Deb Besser, Rachel Farah, Cullen Kittams, Emma Monson, Krista Schumacher, and Jeff Jalkio

  • “Designing Little Free Libraries for Community Partners in a First-Year Graphics and Design Course” by Elizabeth Johnson, Elise Rodich, Hannah French, and AnnMarie Thomas

  • “Math of OK Go” by MiKyla Harjamaki, AnnMarie Thomas, Krista Schumacher, Abby Bensen, and Emma Monson

  • “Empathy, Engineering, and Girls” by Deb Besser, Karin Brown, Alison Haugh, Tami Brass, Rebecca Leininger, and AnnMarie Thomas

  • “Boat Float Engineering Design (Resource Exchange)” by Krista Schumacher, Deb Besser, and AnnMarie Thomas

  • “Circuits and Our Environment (Resource Exchange)” by Elise Rodich, Deb Besser, and AnnMarie Thomas

  • “Art Bots (Resource Exchange)” by Emma Monson, Deb Besser, AnnMarie Thomas, and Debra Monson

“It is particularly exciting for me to see this many papers published in the peer-reviewed proceedings of this conference,” Thomas said.  “It is no small feat to have a paper pass peer-review, and to have this many, involving so many students, is quite a feat.  I am so so proud of our team.”
