Code + Chords

Code + Chords is our software that creates real-time visual displays from musical inputs to enhance live performances by allowing color, shapes, and motion to convey the spirit and structure of the music. The Code + Chords program is available for download at CodeAndChords.org, where users can download the premade visuals or learn how to program and create their own. Through this project, we have collaborated with Cantus, PBS, the University of St. Thomas’ a cappella groups Cadenza and the Summit Singers, Metro Deaf School, the Science Museum of Minnesota, and the St. Paul Public Library.

In this video, Visualizing Music, the University of St. Thomas answers the question, “Why study engineering at a liberal arts college?” Watch as undergraduate students go outside the classroom to get real-world experience working with the nationally renowned singing group Cantus.
